Why is the BMP so much bigger than the JPEG?

BMP stores every pixel without compression. Our test image has 1080 × 2460 = 2,656,800 pixels. At 4 bytes per pixel, that is about 10.6 million bytes (roughly 10 MB), which matches the file we got. A 24-bit BMP uses 3 bytes per pixel, so it would be about 25% smaller, and the size always depends on the image dimensions and color depth, not on how complex the photo is.

Limitations: this result comes from a single test image, so your own files may grow by a different factor.
